Watersheds

This may have been posted before, but I'm too lazy to use the search function to find out.

The watersheds that supply water to New York City are the size of Delaware. -from a Snapple bottle cap

It doesn't mention if it's area or volume, though I don't know how one would estimate the volume of a state.
