I was down in Oak Ridge, TN for the week, staying at the Hampton Inn again. Their "breakfast-to-go" baggies come with mints that have a trivia question on them. Somehow, this time, all four of the ones I grabbed had the same question on them:
Q: Where was Kevin Costner's Field of Dreams located?
A: Dyersville, Iowa.
Also, though, I heard a trivia question on the radio.
Q: New Hampshire is the only state in which it is legal to drive without this?
One of the DJ's sarcastically remarked: A clue? No, I've driven in Massachusetts.
The answer is actually a seat belt.

teetotalism
monday, 1 december, 2008 09:20 MAT
i learned that i'm a teetotaller.
Teetotalism (or T-total) is the practice and promotion of complete abstinence from alcoholic beverages. A person who practices (and possibly advocates) teetotalism is called a teetotaler or teetotaller (plural teetotalers or teetotallers).
i practice teetotalism. i think i might have found something to put in the religion box on facebook now. ha.

indenting in blogger
friday, 14 november, 2008 08:15 MAT
someone says that blogger does not allow the first lines of paragraphs to be indented. i wonder if hard coding spaces in html will allow for this property to appear properly.
i guess it's annoying to have to type that in front of every paragraph, but without that, the only other option seems to fiddle with the template, ick.
that works for now.

The Walt Disney Company and The Jim Henson Company today announced that they have entered into an agreement under which Disney will acquire the beloved Muppets and Bear in the Big Blue House properties from Henson.
The transaction includes all Muppet assets, including the Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo and Animal characters, the Muppet film and television library, and all associated copyrights and trademarks, as well as all the Bear in the Big Blue House characters, television library, copyrights and trademarks. The parties have signed a binding purchase agreement and expect the transaction to close within two months, subject to receiving the necessary regulatory clearances. display rotation
sunday, 17 august, 2008 22:25 MAT
if ctrl + alt + arrow key is pushed when using windows, the display rotates or flips around. apparently, this is a windows function and works with most windows applications. it worked with the powerpoint presentation on the laptop during class. but, disappointingly, it does not work with a widescreen (or, i cannot get it to work with my widescreen or dual screen monitors).

St. Patrick's Day
Brought to my attention by trickshottim. Found in Wikipedia.
"The date of the feast is occasionally moved by church authorities when March 17 falls during Holy Week; this last happened in 1940 when Saint Patrick's Day was observed on April 3rd in order to avoid it coinciding with Palm Sunday, and will happen again in 2008, when it shall be held on 15 March."

cough into elbow
friday, 18 january, 2008 13:10 MAT
i learned over my visit to america that the children there are now taught to cover their mouth with their elbow rather than their hands when they cough or sneeze. it is meant to help minimise spread of viruses and diseases via the hands, especially since children don't wash their hands as often as adults do.

http://www.ebiologynews.com/3774.html
it makes sense, i guess. the world has covered their mouths when they cough or sneeze with their hands for ages now and things seem to be fine, but this new technique isn't such an outrageous thought.

Tax Season
Looks like we didn't learn much in 2007. :P Happy new year! Now how about everyone start thinking about their IRAs.
For 2008, the maximum IRA contribution is $5000, if your salary isn't really high. You have until April 15th to put in your contribution for 2007, which can be up to $4000.
I seem to remember that H&R Block does some 80% of their business between January and April. This was the answer to the final Jeopardy question that Ken Jennings. Actually, the real question was "Most of this firm's 70,000 seasonal white-collar employees work only four months a year."
Ken said FedEx. As a result, his record-breaking streak ended, and H&R Block offered lifetime financial services for him. The article states he was expected to pay approximately $1.045 million from his winnings of $2.52 million.
